#1 Mark Phelan is a worthless hack.

#2 Nissan is one of the biggest subprime lenders, along with FCA and Kia.

you do the math.

Well yeah, I knew that Nissan will finance anyone. I’m pretty sure my dog could get a loan there, and all he does is lounge around and yell at the postman every day.

I just didn’t imagine the Rogue really appealed to that many people.

On top of what everyone else has already said, Nissan sells two different sizes of the Rouge and counts them together. It would be like Ford counting the escape and edge together, easy way to pump numbers.

Rental cars baby!

If you travel for work in the US Nissan’s are EVERYWHERE right now. They and Hyundai’s since they don’t make enough crossovers and they’re trying to dump car inventory on fleets.

I work in a shop that puts aftermarket leather into the S and SV models for 3 mid-volume Nissan stores in the Charlotte market. I drive them regularly and we have at least one in the shop each day. The only SUV/Crossover we see more of in the shop is the CR-V, and that’s because we have all of Hendrick’s business. That includes:

Hendrick Honda Charlotte
Honda Cars of Concord
Honda Cars of Rock Hill
Hendrick Honda of Hickory

Plus two more Honda stores not affiliated with Rick Hendrick’s business.

So yeah, anecdotal observation is enough to believe that.

Also, “The Black Rogue,” sounds like it needs to be a comic book character, not a CUV.

Not an SUV. That’s a CUV. AN SUV has a longitudinally mounted engine, and a live rear axle.

I agree. But they’re classifying it as an SUV in the article.

Not sure why Nissan didn’t just call it a CUV in the commercial to be honest.

Do that many people want leather? I guess they do.

Plus, I guess you have to look at it like this. Some people might want leather, but don’t want to pay the extra price penalty for all the added crap you need just to go up to a more expensive trim level.

That’s the exact reason the company I work for, exists. After incentives, a pretty decently equipped SV model runs around 24k. Leather is about another $1000-1200 depending on which package you get. An SL is still tickling the $30k mark.

They’re cheap for what you get. They have decent gas mileage. They don’t look offensive.

The Camry of the CUV set.

Is the Rogue Sport even on dealer lots yet? I haven’t checked local dealers lately, and haven’t seen any on the road yet.

Actually, the better comparison to make is Ford lumping the entire F-Series lineup together to boost sales, because there’s NO WAY the F-150 sells THAT well without adding the 250-550 models in. Same for the Silverado/Silverado HD, Sierra/Sierra HD, Ram 1500-5500, and Titan/Titan XD. They’ve all gotta be lumped together, no question about it.

Good Car Bad Car’s numbers back it up. Through June, the Rogue has a lead over second place CR-V by a little south of ten thousand. At this point last year, the Rogue was back in 4th, behind Escape (3rd, currently 4th), CR-V (2nd, currently in the same spot), and Rav4 (1st, currently 3rd).

Also, there’s an elephant in the room in the top 5, and it’s not a small CUV, either. The Ford Explorer still sits 5th, in front of 6th place Chevrolet Equinox (Chevrolet’s best selling SUV/CUV)...though that does include Police Interceptor Utility models, too. If they didn’t, the new Equinox would be sitting a solid 5th.

By your definition, Toyota is the only company that makes an SUV anymore, because the 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and Lexus GX & LX are the only currently-available SUVs with live rear axles. Therefore, these are not SUVs, thanks to their independent rear suspensions:

Cadillac Escalade
Chevy Tahoe/Suburban
Dodge Durango
Ford Expedition
GMC Yukon
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Lincoln Navigator
Nissan Armada
Range Rover
Range Rover Sport
Toyota Sequoia

Much like other Nissan’s, they sell for way under MSRP. You can get a base “S” for under $20k. Cheapest CR-V LX near me is $23k. That’s essentially Nissan’s entire business model. They put their sticker price at the same level and Honda and Toyota so that magazine and research websites show them as direct competitors to get people’s attention. Then they discount the crap out of them at the dealer. Sure, they aren’t as good as the competition, but they have similar equipment for a lower selling price. Basically Nissan is doing exactly what Hyundai was doing 10 years ago before they lost their way.

In Hyundai’s defense though, they’ve increased their quality.

They have. And to be honest, they may even be on par with the competition. I say lost their way, because they don’t really have any edge anymore. They used to be clearly a great bargain. Now, they don’t really have as much to differentiate them from any other mainstream brand.
